First saw Jake on the old black and white TV. So long ago now that I think it was steam powered! Cannot add much to what has been offered previously, but, what a beautiful wordsmith (if there is such a word). Had numerous tapes/lp's but these have sadly died or worn out. Now have Jake in a Box CD's. He is much lamented.

Like many others who have already posted their thoughts in this Guestbook, I rediscovered Jake too late.

As a boy watching TV in the sixties I loved Jake. Not just his songs, melodic and witty in the true sense, but the man himself. He seemed to be so funny, so kind and he looked like the sort of adult who would have a kind word for a ten year old boy. I could imagine him sat at our dinner table telling funny stories and including me in the adult conversation. I loved the way he looked and the way he dressed and I decided that when I grew up I wanted to be either Jake or John Lennon. I didn‚Äôt know then but I was destined not to meet either. (though I was pleased to read elsewhere in this website that John was a fan of Jake‚Äôs too).

I don‚Äôt know why we didn‚Äôt have a Jake Thackray LP in our varied record collection. Certainly my Father liked him and we used to buy a new album every Saturday when doing the shopping so I don‚Äôt know Jake slipped through the net. I don‚Äôt know whether to be happy that I have finally rediscovered his music or annoyed that it hasn‚Äôt been part of my life for the last 40 years. I‚Äôve been playing the ‚ÄúLive Performance‚Äù cd to my teenage kids in the car and they love him too. I‚Äôm going to give my parents a copy too.

I can’t tell you how much I regret that I never saw him perform live, or, even better, had a drink with him at the bar afterwards. But I’m pleased that I’ve finally got a bit of Jake in my life.

Forgive me - he was quite the most beautiful looking man I have seen in a remarkably long time. A latter-day James Bond if ever there was a perfect one! Incredible and unique talent.

I‚Äôd been trying to explain to my girlfriend about this brilliant, weird, funny Yorkshire singer but I couldn't remember his name
? I‚Äôd seen him on TV when I was a kid (Bradens Week) but had forgotten him for years. He was really funny, and brilliant and sung a song about a lusty cockerel but I couldn't remember his damned name. To my amazement about a week later I was starring at his picture in the Guardian shouting "that's him! that's the bloke"...sadly it was Jake's obituary I‚Äôd found him and lost him in one foul swoop. Still that brought me to Jake properly and I'm now a huge fan. I just the 'Jake in a Box' CD set, it's wonderful, although I may still have to get the original vinyl recordings as well. Jakes still with us in sprit so raise a glass to Jake the one and only. Great website too, thanks. And that's enough Lah-Di-bloody-Dah from me.

Cheers

I first heard Jake in the 70's as a kid and the style stuck in my mind for a long time. Jasper Carrot did a tribute on one of his shows in the late 80's and a recent Radio 2 documentary followed by the BBC4 documentary were just great, so I finally bought a couple of CDs, which the kids like as well.

Good old Jake.

Heartfelt thanks to you, website organisers; you've made a lot of Jake fans very happy.
I first started performing Jake's songs (quite badly, even though I say it myself)in the late '70's, and remember once giving an old-folks party an impromptu performance, which they loved. It was'nt until the '90's that I saw my hero at The Unicorn in Somerton, Somerset, thanks to Dick Carlyon who set it up. What a wonderful night and a treasured memory now. Jake was obviously more at home in small intimate settings. The recent BBC4 programme at last showed how totally individual and gifted Jake was in his lyrics and music. He has left us all a wonderful legacy, and for me, he's only next door.

Just saw the BBC4 documentary at the weekend. Brought back fond memories of seeing Jake when I was a teenager in my home village of Haxby (Near York) in a small venue (I think it was the methodist hall). Anyone else remember this event?

The documentary spurred me on to discover this excellent website and to seek out some Jake CDs.

Jake was a great ambassador for Yorkshire!

Superb web site dedicated to a true social poet and humorist, Leeds and Monmouth erect a statue(never mind Walpole). I was learning the guitar in the 60's and learned everyone's chords except Jake's, what an unconventionally brilliant player he was.

Having just dusted off an old box of LP's in the loft yeaterday morning I found my Mums Jake collection. What an afternoom full of mixed emotions for me, they brought back many happy memories of my youth listening to them with Mum years ago, (it was the aniversary of her death yesterday too), but no sadness as I imagined her laughing so much she ached! Now I am older I have heard Jake's amazing use of words and language in a different light! Thank you for all you do with the site well done. It was great to rediscover myself, my Mum and of course Great Jake! thank you. x
