| Joan | Signed on: Tue 17 Oct 2006 21:32:46 BST I attended Jake Thackray's late night performance on Saturday 2 July 1983, at the St Alban's Organ Festival Club. I am trying to identify 2 sets of lyrics, 1) concerning an elderly woman who used to pray every day in the church (was she a cleaner?) for God to send her a man - any man. the announcement of this song was greated with a great roar of delight from the audience! and 2) a rather more 'offensive' song probably in the second half of the evening, concerning a big black stallion. Great stuff! Can anyone help? | | | | Tony Dugdale | Signed on: Tue 17 Oct 2006 21:32:35 BST To my shame, until I saw the documentary on BBC4 recently, I had "forgotten" Jake Thackray. But the programme brought back several memories including meeting him in about '73/'74 at Bridlington Folk club where he came to perform. He did the second half and members of the club did the first. I was one of the performers in the first half. After I'd done my piece I sat down a few feet away from Jake, he leaned over and tapped me on the arm. "Well done, young man, " he said in those glorious tones, "I like what you did." I suspect he was being kind, I probably stank the place out..I also suspect he realised that I was only 14 or so and shouldn't even have been in the place. I've already made a start learning some of his songs so I'll never forget him again. | | | | Jeff Yates | Signed on: Tue 17 Oct 2006 21:32:18 BST Isn't it really frustrating to know that the recpordingts of JT and Songs still exist in the BBC archives .... but we can't get a hold of them ? Anyone any suggestions ? | | | | adam | Signed on: Tue 10 Oct 2006 14:17:18 BST I watched the bbc 4 programme the other night and was moved.. not just as a fan but I too, am a Thackray and very proud of Jake...Great songs, amazing lyrics not only to write but to recite in front of a huge crowd whilst playing brilliant guitar riffs...what a performer!! what a hero!! | | | Ken Collins from Luton, United Kingdom | Signed on: Tue 10 Oct 2006 14:17:08 BST I have sent an e-mail to BBC4 asking if they are planning to release the programme transmitted on Friday, 6th October as a D.V.D. If enough of us do likewise perhaps they will! | | | Steve Walker from Sydney Australia | Signed on: Tue 10 Oct 2006 00:14:10 BST How can i get to see the Doco from BBC4 . I don't suppose they have a "Watch Again" facility on the net? Althogh now in Sydney since 1968 I am a big fan of JT. My best mate at Bradford Uni put me on to him,his mother used to teach at the Intake School in Leeds with Jake so we were aware of him when he was less than famous. Anyone got a video/DVD ? Steve | | | | daveindurham | Signed on: Mon 09 Oct 2006 16:36:20 BST Friday's shows were wonderful, recalling all those appearances in the 70s and 80s. Having followed, about three years behind, Jake through Durham into France, where I too learned to love Brassens, I was delighted to see him getting credit at last. He was the nearest thing we had to the incredible Brassens and Brel and yet a truly English star. I'd forgotten the deadpan delivery, which adds to the delight of the songs, which we often hear on the "Very Best". Let's hope this is the start of a national Jake Thackray revival. | | | | Ruth Carroll | Signed on: Sun 08 Oct 2006 21:58:08 BST I watched the programme on Friday night and have to say how talented he was. I hope the BBC show some more of their archive footage. | | | | Christopher Styles | Signed on: Sun 08 Oct 2006 21:57:54 BST I also saw Jake at several gigs in the 1970s, including the fabulous Poynton Folk Club and the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre. I also had the pleasure of meeting him, with Alan Williams at a couple of the gigs. Jake was a truly great bloke. Could the music scene of today produce such an artist? I think not. . . | | | John Corcoran from Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland | Signed on: Sun 08 Oct 2006 16:24:04 BST I saw Jake as a teenager in the mid 1970's, and liked his material greatly then. What happened after that was that I suppose like a lot of my generation we got caught up in punk etc. I now live in Co Kerry in Ireland where my people are from, and was intrigued and moved to see him on the BBC4 documentary the other night. My overwhelming thought was that it was a tribute to his greatness that the songs sound as fresh and as witty as ever. Also in the era of rap and hip-hop its refreshing for people to be reminded of what a wonderfully incisive use of the English language can achieve, in an understated and self-deprecating performer, whose work is the focus and not his ego.I wasn't aware that Jake was taught by the Jesuits as I was also...It allowed me to appreciate the religious references even better. I had, I must admit, forgotten about Jake and was unaware of his death- I am very pleased to be reminded of him, but saddened to hear of his death. I shall endeavour to spread a wider awareness of his genius from henceforth. Auctore Deo........ | | |
