Re:One of Them - 2006/11/17 17:33 Prompted by this thread, I've just edited the lyrics and put the first halves of the verses in quotation marks, to make it clearer that in them Jake is quoting, but in the second halves he's commenting. I know you can't sing the quotation marks, unless you follow Victor Borge, but I do think that if anyone new goes to the lyrics, they might get the correct interpretation a bit easier.

On occasions I've done "The Remembrance" and a few people have laughed in places during the first verse, because they're expecting something funny.

This was exactly what happened with both One of Them and The Remembrance on several occasions when I heard Jake performing these songs live: an uncomfortable moment each time for Jake, and for anyone who knew the songs already. Jake's biggest problem was the expectation of some in the audience that he was always going to be funny.

Re:One of Them - 2006/11/20 20:22 Just as a bit of an after thought on all this,I was once at a gig by the wonderfully amusing Les Barker, in the guise of the "Very Big Mrs. Ackroyd Band" (if you don't know it then I'm afraid it's a bit complicated;maybe check his web site!). Anyway,it was all going along hilariously when Norma Waterson (yes,it's THAT BIG!!) explained that, although a lot of Les's writings were really funny, he was also capable of writing on serious subjects and that the next song was such an offering. It was noticable,I felt, just how tricky it was for the audience to come down from their jollity to a position where they (and I include myself in this) could quite come to terms with what was, indeed,a serious song.As has been said, for those who only knew Jake for his "funny" songs, whenever he launched in to something like "One Of Them" it took some explaining by way of an introduction and ,even then, not everyone "got it"!
