BBC Update - 2003/12/31 14:31 All

Cross posted on Topica and Yahoo: apologies for duplications

I last posted on this subject a year ago and thought it would be worth bringing people up to date.

In 2002 I approached the BBC about getting hold of Jake material. They made it clear that they had commercial rates for that sort of thing but it was not clear what the final sum might be to get hold of the appropriate licences and proceed further. At the time we let the subject fall asleep because (a) it looked like being expensive and (b) the project cds which were the priority project. During 2003 I approached them again and received some comprehensive advice on costs, licencing and the like.

In the meantime, to aid the search for material, I asked on this list if anyone with specific knowledge of Jake's broadcasts (on the BBC or elsewhere) could contact me privately on BBCJake@blueyonder.co.uk and this address is still live. Anyone who didn't eMail me but who has information about broadcasts featuring Jake, please let me know at that address and I'll add it to the list - obviously the more specific the better but don't let vagueness stop you.

Gordon Tennent and myself have, using information previously provided, made inroads into identifying just what does survive and another member of this list also had a home recording of a series which the BBC has either (a) wiped or (b) lost. We shall shortly be looking for radio material.

I have purposely not said much on this forum about these background activities in order to avoid raising false hopes or setting expectations which can't be delivered to. In particular even once the material has been identified it will cost to obtain rights and licences from the BBC and there are other rights issues yet to be resolved. I'll let you know once there is anything to say but it may get quite complex and may (still) take a while before there is anything to say.

Cheers - and Happy New Year

Ian Burdon

Well, that's a long message to tell us you haven't got anything to say, Ian.
But it's good news to know that solid work is going on in the background, while some of us just give out with the nonsense and small talk.

Forgive the suggestion, but isn't this really Project News? Because it's sometimes difficult to remember where one has read what about what ....if you follow me, I was about to put this in a personal file for updates of this sort, when it struck me that they could properly find their place in Project News on the board, which doesn't otherwise get much posting, and we wouldn't have to keep copying and pasting them into our own files to keep track of them? News of Jakefest recordings could also find their place there, and possibly arrangements for future fests as well.

What do you think? Judith

Curses! Uncovered at last for a dissembler.

I'm happy to leave it to an administrator to determine whther or not this topic should be relocated as I'm not really sure what the topic boundaries are.

There, dissembling AND passing the buck. Did I mention that I'm a Civil Servant in the non-Jake world?

Re: BBC Update - 2004/02/14 18:45 So it's true - Jake really did appear on "That's Life!" in 1977! I know, because I've just heard the "To do with you" featured clip, and Mme Rantzen addressed Mr Thackray very politely, and Mr T addressed Cyril Fletcher somewhat sarcastically! Nice to hear though!

It took an absolute age to download, and I wish I could save it to keep; I can't even do that with the video clips, my poor old machine can't seem to cope with them and I would love to be able to see them!

Any tips anyone?

Lots of people currently on line and here at the same time - pity we can't have an online chat! Happy Valentine's day everyone!

Luv Pam

You want the moon on a stick.

Sorry Pam but the clips should not be downloadable. The files are really big to keep the quality good. And I'm still waiting for a chat facility to become available for this system.
