Not a new member but 1st post. - 2006/09/21 12:09 Hi all.
I've been a member on here quite a while but haven't written on here before I think.

You probably know me best as the guy who hosts that scan of the recent Jake article by Martin Newell. (If anyone has a tip on making the file size smaller while keeping the quality please let me know.)

I was introduced to Jake by poet and musician Martin Newell (he's a friend of mine and I host and run his website) and TV director Michael Cumming. he has directed TV shows such as Brass Eye, The Mark Steel Lectures, World Of Pub and The Lenny Henry Show. One night shortly before Jake's death we were at Martin's and the subject came round to 'artists we liked a lot but it would surprise people to know that'.

When Mike mentioned Jake he was just a name to me. I was aware he was a bit folky, a bit in the Richard Stilgoe mould. Mike promised to burn me a Cd and duly did so. He also burned one for Martin. I loved it so much that Mike burned us another one. They are still much treasured as they have some slightly harder to get hold of stuff, like the Jake Thackray and Songs album. I went mad and have since bought everything including old vinyl and I spread the word as much as I can.

One colleague, I introduced to Jakes music, just came back from his holidays and told me he stayed at his wife's brother's house in Liverpool. While nosing around in his brother in law's lp collection he found a Jake LP. (he can't recall which one). His brother in law was amazed he wanted to hear it but they pulled it out and from then on they played it almost non stop for the next couple of days, driving their wives mad. He says one night they got verrr verr drunk listening to the LP, which kept skipping, but they didn't mind.

I'm sure Jake would have loved that.
