Venues - 2006/12/08 10:55 Whilst things seem to be a bit quiet at the moment I was thinking about the various places that I saw Jake perform. Now I have to admit that I didn't keep any diaries so this (incomplete) list is from memory only. The first time was at Theatre Clwyd in Mold:I saw him there on at least two subsequent occasions. I also saw him in Marchweil ,near Wrexham,in a place called The Cross Lanes Hotel.Further gigs ensued at Parkgate on the Wirral (I managed to get his autograph that night, along with that of Alan Williams),King's School in Chester,Chester Gateway Theatre (a late night concert that started at 11 p.m.)and,the last time I saw him perform,at Southport's Art Centre. All this is probably of no interest to anyone else;I just thought I'd mention it.

Well, yours is probably a bit more interesting to Jakes fans than my little lot, anyway,I too noticed it's been a bit quiet here and was thinking of introducing myself. I shouldn't really be here at all as I am a Neil Innes fan but I saw Jake on the "Innes Book Of Records" in 1997 singing "on again" infact it was me who sent in the video clip that's now in the media archive and I nearly fell off my chair laughing. I'm probably as nutty about Neil Innes as you lot are about Jake but unless you have the internet it's impossible to find out what he's up to or even still alive. I've been a Neil fan since I was a teenager (now 42) it wasn't untill I got hold of someones old throwaway computer that I was able to catch up on all he's been up to over the years. Since getting the internet, I've been to see him 6 times and got cd's signed and my photo taken with him it's been great. I've found it impossible to enthuse other people about Neil Innes music and people I know and work with have never even heard of him I suspect Jakes fans have the same problem?
One day I must invite ya'll over to www.neilinnes.org There are hundreds of songs to listen to and he has a new album out. If you only ever listen to a couple of songs I would recomend 'eye candy' which is one of the funnyest non Jake songs you will here and 'Friends at the end' which is the saddest song ever written. Probably with his friend George Harrison in mind.
Anyway, Yeah I've only ever seen Jake on the telly and it was enough to move me to seek him out on t' net. This was back in january 2003 and on first visiting the old Jake Thackray website I learned that he had just recently died which was abit of a shock as I had only ever seen him as he was in 1980 so young and funny and fit and still there are only photo's of him as he was as a young man and then many years later as he was shortly before he died and none in between. He looks like a different person.

Hello Nobby

You're not alone: at least two of us here caught the Bonzos on the recent tour and I was lucky enough to get backstage at the Edinburgh gig and meet them, Including Neil. Nice chap.

Ian I got boogie, boogie, in my socks

Re:Venues - 2006/12/10 11:09 Nobby,in a seperate posting I mentioned Telford's Warehouse in Chester:well in recent months Neil Innes played there and I would have gone (I go there quite regularly)but Sod's Law (in which I'm a great believer!)dictated that I couldn't because I was in Italy at the time. Oh well, maybe next time. Thanks for providing the video clip of Jake from the "...book of records";much appreciated.

Lucky you!! I heard the tour was very sucessful. I didn't go to any of the shows but I did go to the 40th anniversary gig at the Astoria in London which was so well received and sold out, it spured the the tour.
The Astoria gig was filmed for dvd and was on BBC4 a while ago and as the camera pans the audience I am there in the front row! WhooHoo!!
