Re:Sr Jo, Leeds, Sat 11 June - 2005/04/18 11:11
The SJKTH matinee at the City Varieties, Leeds, is on Saturday June 11th, starting at 2:30.
After the matinee we will be gathering in the private function room of The Packhorse pub, about 250 yards away, still in Leeds city centre, convenient for restaurants and transport home, close to the bus station and half a mile from the train station. I have colleagues in Leeds who often hold functions in this room and they rate the pub quite highly and recommend it. Coincidentally, the landlord went to the same primary school as Jake, almost thirty years later, and he said that Jake was celebrated as the school's most famous old boy.
There will be some minimal cost, which we will be able to cover with a pound or two a head.
Unfortunately the pub stops serving food at 5 on a Saturday. This may be too late for us, depending on the length of the show (which is still being written; any guidance, Ian or Sarah?). We could have a sandwich buffet for a few quid, but I will need to know numbers beforehand. Or there are plenty of places to eat in the neighborhood.
I will post some accommodation suggestions shortly, but if you're going and have Internet access I suggest you look yourself and book soon, since some of the city centre hotels are already out of single rooms for that weekend.
Nearer the time I will ask for an indication of who will be going, so I can decide what to do about the pub: buffet, paying for the upstairs bar to be opened.
Can I please have a firmer indication of performers who will be there, so we can decide whether we have sufficient to try to have a formal show with baggsy lists or whether to have something more impromptu. I think that so far we have just Paul Thompson, Phil McGinity and Malcolm Jeffrey as performers, with other people still wavering.
Less than eight weeks away now!

Accommodation hints for Leeds, 11 June
Plenty of city centre hotels - see links below. The suburbs have cheaper single and triple/family rooms, not that much to choose between centre and suburbs for doubles.
Advice from my Leeds colleagues is that Roundhay, post code LS8, is the ideal suburb if you're looking for something probably a little cheaper than a city centre hotel - good public transport links, safe parking and a number of small hotels / B&Bs.
ROUNDHAY All these have rooms for 10-11 June.
I'm staying here: Beechwood Hotel, 34 Street Lane, LS8 2ET Tel: 0113 266 2578. No singles left. Doubles at £50-60 a night, triples £60-70 per room (top price is en suite) including breakfast, car parking.
Clock Hotel, 317-319 Roundhay Road, LS8 4HT Tel: 0113 249 0304, singles £40/45, doubles £50/55, family £65 (top price is en suite), breakfast £5 extra, car parking
Adriatic Hotel, 87 Harehills Avenue, LS8 4ET, Tel: 0113 262 0115, single £38, double/twin £48, triple £66 per room, all ensuite, incl breakfast, car parking
Ashmount Hotel, 22 Wetherby Rd, LS8 2QD, Tel: 0113 265 4263, single £34, double £62, incl breakfast, car parking
HEADINGLEY Second and final suburb recommended by my colleagues is Headingley, LS6, which has lots of B&Bs near the university and good transport links. It may not be the absolutely best place to leave your car over Saturday night but no problems if you find somewhere with its own parking. I've not listed anywhere but I could Google a few places if anyone is stuck.
CITY CENTRE This website is the best I found for city centre hotels: http://www.leeds-uk.com/accommodation-0.htm.
I suggest you use the website to specify your requirements and see what comes back. I'm listing just a couple here:
Bewley's Hotel, City Walk, Sweet Street, LS11 9AT, Tel: 0113 234 2340. It has rooms at £69 a night regardless of number of occupants, room only, for doubles/twins and family rooms, and it has its own car park.
Best single room price I found in the centre was £47 at the Comfort Inn, Bishopgate Street, LS1 5DY, which also has the best double price at £55. Can't find a phone number, though, and the price seems to vary depending on which website you use. This site has the single at £47: http://www.hotelpronto.com, this has the double at £55: http://www.activehotels.com/servlet/xmlbrochure/index.do?hotelid=103302.
This site for the Golden Lion Hotel, 2 Lower Briggate, LS1 4AE has singles at £49 and doubles at £69: http://www.activehotels.com/servlet/xmlbrochure/index.do?hotelid=103397
The local tourist office is on tel: 0113 242 5242 or 0113 234 8080.
If you find yourself in difficulty, drop me a line.
