Edinburgh Baggsy List - 2005/05/12 07:48 Hail and well-met, Performers !

(Cross-posted to Topica and Yahoo)

Now that preparations for the Edinburgh JakeFest are unleashed, it is my proud privilege to kick off the Edinburgh Baggsy List for performers of Jake's songs on the main night of Saturday 17th September.

If you would like to play a set of Jake's songs on the main night, then, in the time-honoured words of Raymondo, this...is what...you do !

Going by the past volumes of interested participants, Ian, Phil and I believe that each performer should easily be able to fit 3 songs in their set, so this year I'll be inviting you all to send me your preferred list of 3 songs, with a fourth song to be considered if time permits. It would be helpful if you could send me a full list of the Jake songs you do as well, so that as the songs are baggsied by players, I can quickly offer you alternatives from your possible songs, or barter with other singers for swapsies. At least, can you let me know if you are prepared to join in the traditional closing mass performance of "On Again ! On Again !".

This year, however, there's a catch. Let's face it, everyone would like to have a chance to play "Sister Josephine", "Bantam Cock" or "Brother Gorilla", but these are the famous ones and they get snapped up very quickly, and often in multiples. In order to spread them around so that other people can have a go, we've decided to ask yous guys to only include only ONE of the really famous ones in their set when baggsying, rather than doing two or three of them. It should be a little fairer, as some people can only do a few numbers and are sometimes prevented from playing at all because the only ones they can play all disappear in the first couple of days. So here's an arbitrary list of Jake's most famous numbers which we'd all like to do given the chance :

Sister Josephine
Brother Gorilla
Bantam Cock
Leopold Alcocks/Alcox
Jolly Captain
The Hole
Worried Brown-Eyes
The Bull
Lah-Di-Dah

So, when you're baggsying, can you try to plump for only one of the above in your set, please ? Learn some new songs if you have to ! It's good for the soul ! Variety is the spice of life !

Last thing : following the unfeasible achievement of Ian Burden and that other bloke in getting "I Stayed Off Work All Day" correct... twice... last year in Torrington, it was mooted that maybe the mantle of playing it as a duo should fall to another couple of victims (victims ? did I say that out loud ? Lucky Performers, that's what I meant). Are there any takers for this prestigious part of the show ?

So, to summarise : I need to know...

a) 3 songs each for definite
b) 1 spare one if time permits, and which one it is
c) a full list of the Jake songs you do if possible, especially if "On Again !" is one of them
d) only one of the popular ones please !
e) there is NO point e)
f) did YOU Stay Off Work Today ?

Mail them to me at malcolm(dot)jeffrey(at)virgin(dot)net... and let the mayhem commence !

Re:Edinburgh Baggsy List - 2005/05/15 13:04 Ladies and Gentlemen !

Only three days into baggsying Jake numbers for Edinburgh, and things are being snapped up fast ! If YOU are planning to baggsy a set, and haven’t done already, I would do it QUICK if I were you or “only the French ones will be left” This especially applies to “The Kiss”, which is this year’s favourite request by dint of appearing on the sets of five people so far, the last four of whom remain thwarted !

Please also bear it in mind that if you post your list to Topica, Yahoo or JTdotCOdotUK rather than direct to me at malcolm(dot)jeffrey(at)virgin(dot)net, I may not notice it until long after half your bfavourites have been snapped up. Cave !

Here’s what you can pick from…

brother gorilla
Caroline Diggeby-Pratte
the Castleford ladies' magic circle
the cenotaph
country bus
country girl
dog
fine bay pony
the girl in the window
the girl with the fragile eyes
go little Swale
Grandad
the gravedigger
the hair of the widow of Bridlington
the hole
I stayed off work today
Isabel makes love upon national monuments
Isobel
the jolly captain
Joseph
ladies' basic freedoms polka
the last will and testament of Jake Thackray
lullaby
Miss World
old Molly Metcalfe
on again ! on again !
on the shelf
One-Eyed Isaac
one of them
over to Isobel
pass Milord the rooster juice
the policeman's jig-jig
the poor sod
the rain on the mountainside
remember Bethlehem
romance
Salvation Army girl
Sister Josephine
the singer
to do with you
the tortoise
worried brown-eyes

All the rest are gone. Be swift !
