Re:Jake on the Box - BBC4 6th Oct 06 - 2006/10/11 14:37 Great programme - long enough for an introductory overview without bothering others, like my wife, who aren't particularly a fan but can recognise his humour/cleverness.

Re:Jake on the Box - BBC4 6th Oct 06 - 2006/10/11 15:38 I was watching the show cuddled up on the sofa with my wife Kay, who was also one of the nuns captured for all time in the BBC archives. "I'm on the bl00dy telly !", she shouted.

Apart from a long shot of Phil "Chairman" McGinity singing, one of Tony Cima sat on the stage in the interval and Ian Burdon performing some sort of faintly wartime-looking salute, the Topica Ladies were the clear audience favourites !

Re:Jake on the Box - BBC4 6th Oct 06 - 2006/10/12 22:27 The BBC4 'Have Your Say' section now features ten highly positive comments about last week's programmes, including some from familiar names. More lobbyists for a re-showing of these programmes on BBC2, or the re-showing of other Jake material, are encouraged to post comments on the BBC4 site. Let's keep up the momentum, folks!

Re:Jake on the Box - BBC4 6th Oct 06 - 2006/10/14 12:27 I've just (happily) discovered this web-site and I'm another one of those who do remember Braden's Week etc and I pat myself on the back for recognising Jake's talent when I was a teenager who by rights shouldn't have been interested in such a non-mainstream style.

I've got the La-Di-Dah CD which gives me my fix of Jake and I regularly trot out the track Sophie for my teenage daughter (Sophie), who, surprisingly enough, is not as embarrassed as you might think by it.

Anyway, what a wonderful surprise to stumble upon the BBC broadcast the other day. I did manage to get some sort of recording of it on VHS, albeit in black and white (technical problems), and it does mean I can listen to Remembrance and The Bull (see other posts re their rarity), but I would love to get hold of proper legit recordings of these two brilliant songs, especially Remembrance, which has to be the most inspiring anti-war song I've ever heard - should be on the national curriculum!

The only thing I'd have liked to have seen more of in the programme would have been a bit more about his later years. I realise we would be straying into privacy issues, but I can't help being curious about what happened to Jake, what demons he may have been dealing with. It was as if there was a bit of a taboo about speaking about it, andI was left trying to read between the lines (and therefore probably being completely inaccurate). Surely Jake was all about challenging taboos?

Having said that, of course we have to respect his surviving nearest and dearest - I dare say there is more information out there about Jake's life if I look. Early days in my rejuvenated interest.

Re:Jake on the Box - BBC4 6th Oct 06 - 2006/10/20 12:25 Having watched the tape (AGAIN)of this fabulous programme,I have a question:does anyone know for sure where the recording of "The Gorilla" took place ? It looks to me remarkably like the studio for "The Old Grey Whistle Test" but I'm probably wrong.
