Re:Jake on Video or DVD - 2006/10/15 00:51
I would be very grateful if someone can recommend me where I can buy a copy of video recordings of Jake Thackray performance. I was very surprised seeing the performance of such a person on 6th of October 2006 on BBC4. I have never seen anything similar on the TV. Some TV programmes are aimed to make the financial profit only, showing films which make people stupid, but nobody complains about it. The above BBC4 programme had intentionally or unintentionally the opposite result, i.e. to make people the deep thinking (but not just the surface thinking).
I understood from the info on this website that Jake Thackray did not have a university’s degree. I can only imagine what kind of songs he would produce if he could join a university community in his time. It is interesting to note that people like Jake Thackray were very popular among Russian intelligentsia in 60th – 80th years. I don’t think that I will be wrong if I will say that there was any one man or woman who was not interested and/or actively involved in regular gatherings with people like Jake Thackray. You can ask any Russian person of that generation and you will receive the positive answer. (Such singers are called “bardi”, but there is no the direct translation of this word in English).
I think that it will be very interesting for people in the entire world to have the access to the British heritage music, like the music of Jake Thackray. For many non-native English speakers it is quite difficult to understand every word of his songs from the CD record. The beauty of the above BBC4 programme is that the subtitles were provided. This allows to everyone to understand everything in his songs. The power of Jake Thackray is not in the nice guitar melody, but in his songs’ words.
Do you know any modern singers like Jake Thackray today? I would be happy to attend their concerts if there are such around.
Best regards.
George.
