Re:New member? - 2005/01/29 06:31 Yes, well, when I kicked off this thread I had hoped that it would afford new members an opportunity to say hello and maybe a few words about themselves. The best laid schemes, however, gang oft agley.

Re:New member? - 2005/01/29 12:39 To all Expert/Gold/Senior(old?) boarders and admin.

You’ve taunted me too long! Yes, I am one your despised lurker.

I am not sure if I am typical, but I joined up some months ago looking for the lyric of a song Jake Thackray sang at two gigs I went, to but with Ian’s help it turned out not to be written by him! – Job’s Worth. See the threads if you’re interested.

Since then I have been a regular visitor to the site but I have to admit that I did not realise I was lurking. I now feel terribly shabby and worthless, but honestly I had nothing of value to add to you eloquent and experienced boarders.

If it’s a profile of my sad type you want – I am an unashamed 55 year old engineer - married for with two grown up kids. For the past two years. I have been working in Denmark managing a Product Development team designing coffee machines.

In addition to my professional activities here we have been trying to form the Odense Headquarters of GOM International – Grump Old Men International.

The Jake Thackray website has been one of my electronic haunts over the past two years and if it wasn’t for you I probably wouldn’t have known about Sister Josephine Kicks the Habit. I’m planning to be there, hopefully in Leeds. Yes - I will be lurking there too!

Thanks for the web site.

So now you know why I don’t post so often, I just “go on again, on again”

Yours

Lurking of Odense, DK

Re:New member? - 2005/01/29 14:52 Hallo all,

Since lurkers appear to be disapproved of on this forum (though I can't think why --don't you find it flattering when people lurk inquisitively? I know I would!) I decided to introduce myself. I'm a relatively young fan of Jake's and first discovered him about a year ago when I heard Lah-di-Dah, an utterly brilliant and subversive song and still my favourite, hotly pursued by Sister Josephine and Ulysses. Since I am also a huge fan of Jacques Brel, I was able to hear the chansonnier influence on Jake's work at once. I have been cogitating on where Jake fits in the English folk (sort-of) tradition and musing on the possibility of writing an article on him for my online magazine, which, among other things, examines some of the quirkier areas of English culture. All of this helps to explain why I joined the site last week, although to be frank I've been too busy to do much lurking since then (with the exception of enjoying the witty posts on this forum). So that's me, then.

Cheers

Re:New member? - 2005/01/29 17:34 Howdy

I for one do NOT disapprove of lurkers - I was just curious to know who is here: there are as you surmise a number of old lags many of whom know each other from the occasional Jakefests. However the old lags now account for about 20% of the membership here and I'm genuinely interested in the other 80%!

Cheers

Re:New member? - 2005/01/29 23:00 I'd echo that - and as one of the old lags who's been lucky enough to have met lots of the others I think lots of them would say the same thing.

Meanwhile I have a couple of questions - John - have you ever lived in the Midlands? albionmag - is there a Midlands connection with you too?

Sis Jo kicks the Habit (see links) might be an opportunity to meet up with some others; maybe we should use this forum to let others know when we're going to be there. (Definitely Sat Mat in Leeds for me, maybe at least another............)

Pam (who can't use smilies or anything on here and still doesn't know why...... :o(

And John Dixon thinks we prolific posters "despise" lurkers.

Disapprove of? Despise? Absolutely not! What on earth gave you that idea? Yes, the word itself has negative implications in plain English (to lie in wait; to be concealed; to skulk; to linger around furtively), but on the Internet it is purely the descriptive word for people who read but don't post, and in that context the word has no negative connotations at all. Here on the 'net, lurkers are just people who share our interests but don't feel the need to chip in with their two-penn'orth - no more, no less.

All the Jake sites were set up and are run for the benefit of people who are interested in Jake and to try to promote wider knowledge and love of Jake and his oeuvre, so the more people who visit the sites the better, unreservedly, whether or not they want to post.

As for finding lurkers flattering, well, yes: nearly 600 people here is brilliantly rewarding. So long as they are content. The only downsides to lurking are that (1) the serial posters among us don't get any feedback from the silent majority on whether the site(s) and the chat is good/bad/about right/could be better or whatever - until people unsubscribe in protest, and (2) with such a small number of active posters it's impossible to get any sort of a community consensus opinion when we need one. Still, we've been going on long enough that those drawbacks are negligible.

Come and lurk, or post, as pleases you, so long as you're happy being here. I'm sure I speak for all the "Expert/Gold/Senior(old?) boarders and admin" when I say we'd far, far rather you lurked than weren't here at all.

But we wouldn't complain if a few more of you found the time to drop us a line so we could all get to know you a little.
