Re:JAKE - LIMITED ED. DOUBLE CD - E - 2004/03/15 21:24 Hmm, well, as one who has in the past indulged in the odd "move along now lads" on Topica I'm largely unrepentant.

I share Malcy's regret at a number of aspects of this but I can't say that the appearance of Project cds on eBay is a total surprise - frankly in some ways it's a bit of a surprise that it took this long. I can't say my own position on this issue is one of total ethical purity either - my copy of On Again! On Again! has a "factory sample not for resale" sticker on it and I've had the benefit of someone ignoring that. Admitedly the latter does not involve the same underlying sense of some collective boundary having been breached, but the situations are sufficiently similar - on reflection - to temper my original disappointment with a bit of self-awareness.

Mind you, having recently flogged off some vinyl in order to up the quality of the resident guitars in the house, no Jake material was amongst that which went.

The 'Topica police' is a polite name for the Topica Gestapo. You and the other friendly neighbourhood coppers can move me along any time; you're not one of them.

Everyone else

As for Project CDs, well, with 300 out there you're bound to have some people who need the cash more than they need the CDs. Bobby Moore (or one of those 'heroes') sold his 1966 World Cup medals not so long ago. A number of people, maybe most, couldn't understand just how he could do that. But he wanted or needed the cash more than the medals. And I can understand that. I don't see that it's offensive if some people have different values to you - in fact that's unavoidable.

If you're unhappy with the concept, console yourselves with the thought that a number of people had to be disappointed not to get a Project CD when they were originally issued, but that two more lucky people will soon have their very own copy of the Project CD: a legal way of satisfying more community members.

We just need to keep an eye on the serial numbers, though, so we can take appropriate action if people start bootlegging.

Re:JAKE - LIMITED ED. DOUBLE CD - E - 2004/03/16 03:13 Hmm, bossybootsbarlow is a new boarder and hails from Wolverhampton but does not have any feedback. Could this be a new identity to prevent being found out? Of course we could just ask David who got this copy and name and shame whoever it is. But why bother after all there were no conditions attached to the purchase of these wonderful discs.

Re:JAKE - LIMITED ED. DOUBLE CD - E - 2004/03/17 08:59 Jean Barlow, serial number 83. lives in Wolverhampton. Im OK with its authenticity, but will advise any buiyer to contact me for proof. The tell tales are still there on the originals.

Sorry I had to do it guys, but with astronomy, I see my bank manager more than I see my friends.... The new camera is going to cost £850.

Hope you can forgive me at some stage.

I can't, because I don't see there's any need for forgiveness: you needed items you couldn't otherwise afford so you could do things that would please you more than the mere ownership of the CD.

I know that you didn't do it lightly and I understand your need and your reluctant juggling of priorities. I'm sorry it came to that; but glad that, when it did, you had the CD to trade for your stargazing bits. Of course you still have the memory of what you did and the award in recognition of your efforts, while the rest of us have just the bits of plastic.

The second eBay one isn't atracting much interest, I note - just two bids (by the same person, apparently for the same amount!) and the reserve still not met, with over a third of the auction period gone. With luck that should stop the flood before it starts.
