DEVON JAKEFEST - 17th/18th (and possibly 19th) September 2004 PDF Print E-mail

All the events listed will take place at the Plough Arts Centre, Great Torrington, North Devon.

Torrington is a typical Devon market town, set in stunningly beautiful countryside not far from the North Devon coast. For more details of the area, and pictures of the town, see the town's web site by clicking HERE .

The Plough is a multi-purpose arts centre, with an auditorium/cinema, caf?©, bar, gallery, dance studio and craft workshops. Our Friday and Saturday evening events will take place in the auditorium, which will be laid out with cabaret-style seating; other events will take place in the gallery and workshops, and the caf?© will be open throughout Friday and Saturday as a place to meet, share a cup of coffee, slice of homemade cake or a meal from the varied menu, and chat.

Friday 17th
Anybody who loves Jake's music will know how deeply influenced he was by the work of Georges Brassens, who also became a personal friend. This autumn's Jakefest acknowledges the special relationship between Jake and Georges with an evening of Brassens' songs, performed by the Jazz quartet 'Projet Brassens'. This cabaret performance will be combined with a French meal (a set menu, with vegetarian alternative, and dessert - details TBA), included in the ticket price. Drinks available from the bar.

Led by saxophonist/clarinetist Charlie Hearnshaw, with vocalist Maxine Green, Projet Brassens interpret Tonton Georges' songs in delightful cabaret jazz style. Having both seen them perform live and heard them on CD, I can personally guarantee you a wonderful evening, with the opportunity to meet and catch up with old Jakefest friends before Saturday's busy programme of events kicks in. For more details of Projet Brassens, click HERE to see their web site.

Tickets: £18 per head, inc. two-course meal.

Saturday 18th (precise times TBA)
Morning
An informal get-together and question-and-answer session, with speakers (to be confirmed) including Dr Colin Evans (friend of Jake and Georges, and responsible for their appearance together at the opening of the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff), Ian Watson (our own Scartam) and Roger Stennett (jointly responsible for the 'Sister Josephine Kicks the Habit' theatre project), members of the committee and others, to be announced. We hope to be able to screen some rare Jake footage at this meeting.

Tickets: none, but we would appreciate a small donation on the door, to help cover costs.

Afternoon Informal musicians' workshop. Details TBA.

Tickets: none, but we would appreciate a small donation on the door, to help cover costs.

Evening
The Jakefest get-together we've all come to know and love. An evening of Jake's songs, cabaret seating, bar, late licence - you know the form. Malcy will be coordinating the musicians, as he has most ably at previous Jakefests, and will make an announcement shortly about the baggsy list.

Tickets: £7, £5 under-16s.

Sunday
If there is sufficient interest, I could probably arrange for the caf?© in the Plough to open for a late-ish breakfast/brunch. This would give us all the opportunity of a last get-together before (for most of us) the long trip home. How to book
The Plough's box office will handle all ticket sales. You can reserve your tickets by calling the box office on 01805 624624. The Plough cannot accept credit card payments, but you can pay for your tickets by post, including an SAE for their return.

Please book your tickets as soon as you are sure you want to come. We have to sell enough tickets to cover the cost of these events, and they will be made available to the general public when the next Plough brochure comes out at the end of June.

Please note - the Plough is a smoke-free zone. No smoking is permitted in the building.

Accommodation.

There is plenty of good B&B and hotel accommodation in the Torrington area. Prices for B&B are usually around £20 - £25 per person. There are also several touring caravan parks, and static, self-catering holiday caravans available to rent for the weekend. If you would like me to send you a list of B&Bs, hotels and caravan parks within easy reach of Torrington, please email me with your requirements (email address as above).

If there's anything else you'd like to know, please drop me an email. I'll get the answers to FAQs posted on Topica, for the benefit of others in the group.

See you there!

Sarah
